Comparing media language in music videos.

Now you need to write about the two music videos we have been looking at in class. You can write this in your book or on a Word document (but you will need to email this to your teacher by the end of the lesson - l.downie@lutterworthcollege.com). Task: Explain  one  way in which music videos use media language to differ from each other. Refer to  one  example of contrasting media language in  two  music videos you have studied to support your answer. Intertextuality

Both music videos are intertextual (they refer to other media products) in that they use locations - the beach party, the high school - established in films and other music videos. Watch the trailer of 1996 film The Craft and look at the intertextual references made in the Black Magic Music Video. Can you think of any other media products that may be referenced in the Somebody To You music video?

Analysing Representation in Music Videos

Music videos are marketing products, designed to appeal to the target audience by portraying the artists as somebody they aspire to be like or could relate to. Watch The Vamps Somebody to You and Little Mix Black Magic music videos below and consider how the way the band and characters in the video are presented are designed to appeal to their own music fans. To analyse the music videos effectively, you need to find three frames from each one to look closely at. Once you have your frames, you need to pick out the following using moving image terminology: Camera Angles/Movements (Establishing, Long, Medium, Close-up, Point-of-view, Over-the-shoulder, Zoom in, Tracking, Panning, High Angle and Low Angle shots). Mise-en-scene (Costume, Lighting, Setting or Location, Props). Editing (How is the story cut together? Is it in time with the music?) You could also consider how the video is structured.
