Now you need to write about the two music videos we have been looking at in class. Label the different elements used to create the message in this film marketing poster for Ready Player One: 1. Media Language - pick out the codes and conventions of film posters and label them around the image. Image Title - comment on the font or colour too Graphics Director, Actor, Producer names (if they are part of the film's Unique Selling Point - they are so well-known that will help sell a film) Critic Reviews and Awards Taglines or Straplines Release Date Billing 2. How musicians are represented in a marketing campaign reflects something about their music genre and target audience. Here Ariana is represented as an artist who is beautiful, honest and yet with an innocent look. All of these traits are designed to appeal to the target audience and create a pop genre image.  Task: Look closely at this digipak and label the codes used to signify more about her work and her as an artist. Task: Pick 3 album covers from (from 3 different music genres). Copy them onto a Word document or PowerPoint. How are Teenagers Represented in the media?

Teenage Stereotypes A stereotype is a thought that can be adopted about specific types of individuals or certain ways of doing things. These thoughts or beliefs may or may not accurately reflect reality. Is it fair how teenagers are represented in the media? Look for a variety of images representing the typical teenager. Is is easy to find positive images or are most of them negative? Why is this the case? Research Task Collect a range of images on a Powerpoint slide - Print this out to stick into your book. Find three news articles which involve teenagers. Using these images and articles as your evidence. Write in your book about what you think are the key stereotypes that teenagers have to cope with? Do you think it is fair? Extension Task Can you think of anywhere in the media where teenagers are presented in a positive or realistic way? Add this to your work to try and balance your argument about teenage stereotyping.

CD Cover Activity Now that you've completed research into existing CD Album covers, choose a music artist that you like and create the CD cover artwork for a new release. Even though most people stream music the artwork is still very important. You need to invent the title of the album and decide on the style of CD cover you are going to make.    TASK 1 - Create a mood-board of at least 30 images which reflect your chosen artist. Use word or publisher to do this. TASK 2 - Think about how you want your artist to be represented. Underneath your mood-board, explain how and why you will represent your artist. Your task is to research CD cover/ album (vinyl) cover art. Pick three or four music artists that you like and research the artwork (only album cover art is permitted) that accompanies their musical releases.  Google the artists name and look for their discography on wikipedia. Save examples of their work and make a document that displays them effectively. Answer the following questions for each piece of artwork: What works best about the image that has been selected? Why has that particular image been selected and what is effective about it? How is the artist being represented in the artwork? What colours (colour palette) have been used? Introduction to TV Drama: Representation of Teens

Do you believe these characters are real? A writer's job is tricky, especially with science fiction genre TV Drama programmes. They must engage the audience and make them invest in the characters in order to deliver a satisfying narrative resolution.  Class is made for BBC 3, a channel that caters for young people. So you can expect the characters to seem realistic because the target audience need to believe they are seeing themselves presented as real people. Task: Watch the trailer again and jot down any elements of the characters that make them seem like realistic teenage characters. In media lessons, you will be finding out how teenagers are represented in TV Drama and thinking about whether they are fairly and accurately portrayed by writers or whether they are heavily stereotyped. Stereotype (brief definition): 'a widely held but fixed and oversimplified image or idea of a particular type of person or thing'. Are teenagers represented in a fair way in the media? Find a variety of images representing the typical teenager. Is it easy to find positive images or are most of them negative? What are the reasons for this? Research Task: Collect a range of images (at least 10) of teenagers, both positive and negative. Make a mood board or poster using these images. ( use Photoshop ). Print out and stick in your book. Representation Understanding representation is all about understanding the choices that are made when it comes to portraying something or someone in a mass media text. It's impossible to portray every aspect of an individual in a photograph, or even in a feature film, so certain features of their personality and appearance get highlighted, and are often enhanced, when it comes to constructing the representation that the audience will see. When representing a person, media texts often focus on their:   Age Gender Race/Ethnicity Financial Status Job Culture/nationality Signs and symbols are used as a kind of visual shorthand to represent these attributes. When we decode these signs we make assumptions about who the character is (usually by comparing them to similar characters we have encountered before), and this allows us to put them in a category and "read" them in context.
